The Modern Ceramic Planter has been hand thrown on the wheel with a porcelain stoneware clay body. About a week later, when the planter is dried to leather hard, I trim the bottom of the piece and then my MadeByPowley stamp is impressed at the base of the planter. The planter then is left to dry another week to 10 days before it is placed in the kiln for its first firing, the bisque firing which reaches to a temperature of 1050 degrees Celcius.

After 3 days, the planter is removed from the kiln and ready to glaze. The interior of the planter and the top section of the outside is a glossy warm white.  This has been achieved by using a transparent glaze and allowing the clay to show through. The rest of the exterior of the planter has been glazed in a glossy yellow!

I brush a black glaze into my MadeByPowley stamp and then remove the excess glaze with a damp sponge. The planter/utensils holder is now ready for its final firing, the high fire, to 1240 degrees Celcius. Three days later the kiln is cooled sufficiently to be able to safely open it. So happy to see and feel the sunshiny yellow and the transparent glaze. Very tactile!!
